Held within many private international collections. With countless exhibitions, awards and publications. Carlos Madrid is an artist of impeccable talent and status. At the age of eighteen in 1968, Carlos left Peru for Israel eager to see other cultures. “Israel and Jerusalem were for me a first encounter with the larger world. I found the ancient Holy City and its surrounding landscape, like the Andes Mountains of my childhood, filled with magic, history, religion and mysticism.”
“I came to cherish the silence and beauty I experienced in the desert, temple, church and ancient ruin. These experiences continued to enrich me and reinforced my deep desire to become an artist. Only through the careful study of nature can life shine in a work of Art.”
In 1973, the Yom Kippur War drove Carlos to look for a new home and he accepted a scholarship at Parsons School of Design in 1974. Although he moved to America and settled in Manhattan, he travelled widely in North and South America, Europe and India, fulfilling his early childhood dream of seeing the world and its different cultures, all together he has lived and worked in ten different countries.
“Through the craft of painting and drawing I find my connection to the world. Following the ancient tradition of storytelling using images and materials such as oils, charcoal and graphite, my goal as an artist is to emulate and recreate the timeless craftsmanship and content I find in the work of the Great Masters.”
“These are qualities that I have admired since my childhood in my native Peru. Line, form, color, composition and their interaction upon matter are the elements that I use to transmit to the viewer the moments of silence and beauty I experience when engaged with my work”.
“The drama between light and shadow gives life to my subjects and infuses them with a reality of their own. The process of art making is like a mirror which reflects our own image when we look upon it. I hope that my paintings and drawings reflect my intentions of sharing a special moment with my audience.”
